Queensland Police fitness assessment requirements

The QPS entry targets, official assessment arrangements and a practical way to prepare.

QLD Police Fitness Test

The four entry requirements

Queensland Police Service applicants must meet the same fitness standards regardless of age or gender. The land-based assessment comprises three components, with swimming proficiency verified separately.

  • Prone bridge: hold the required position for at least 90 seconds, with your body straight from shoulders to ankles.
  • Push-ups: at least 10 standard push-ups from the toes at one every two seconds.
  • 20-metre beep test: reach at least Level 5/7, meaning level 5, shuttle 7.
  • Swimming: swim 100 metres continuously and untimed, using any stroke or combination of strokes, without stopping or touching the side or bottom with your hands or feet. Obtain verification from an approved swimming instructor.

Where to complete your official assessment

Queensland residents complete the land-based assessment at a Queensland PCYC unless QPS Recruiting approves an alternative. The PCYC fitness assessment is free. Private preparation coaching is a separate service.

Applicants outside Queensland can use an equivalent organisation or an appropriately accredited personal trainer. You pay any associated private assessment costs and must retain an unedited video of an assessment completed outside a Queensland PCYC. Provide it to QPS only when requested.

Follow the current QPS forms and assessor instructions. Passed fitness assessments are valid for six months; the recruitment process states that swimming verification does not expire.

Prepare for the assessment technique

Measure your shuttle track to 20 metres and practise with the official beep-test audio. Stop and turn at each end instead of running in a continuous curve, and wait for the beep before starting the next shuttle.

For push-ups, practise the two-second cadence, a straight body and the required chest depth against a 7-centimetre dome cone. Build your prone-bridge endurance while maintaining the required posture.

Track your current scores, work consistently on your weakest land-based component and arrange swim preparation separately. Our six-week coaching programs include structured training and practice assessments; your preparation timeframe depends on your starting point.

Entry standards and academy training

At the academy, recruits must also complete a timed obstacle course and a 75-kilogram dummy drag. These are academy activities, rather than additional components of the applicant land-based entry assessment. The academy beep-test minimum is also Level 5/7.
